German early Romanticism was not only an era of great poetry, but also developed a spiritual worldview that anticipated much of what today's people seek in esotericism, shamanism, Far Eastern religion: the connection of thinking and intuition, understanding and feeling, science and religion, as well as a view of nature as a living organism that cannot be understood only through rational dissection. In artistic independence, the early Romantics developed highly individual forms of spirituality that have lost none of their fascination and inspiring power to this day. We travel to magical landscapes in Germany with texts by Hölderlin, Novalis, Goethe, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, and others to explore this hitherto little illuminated side of European intellectual history. "It is undoubtedly to Sünner's credit that this beautiful film opens up a source of modern and enlightened spiritual thought that still has much to say to us in our search for a postmodern spirituality." (What is Enlightenment?)
