Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961) was UN Secretary-General from 1953 until his death in an unexplained plane crash. He created the first "blue helmet force" on the occasion of the Suez crisis in 1956. He was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his peace work in the style of "soft diplomacy" in the Middle East conflict and in the Congo. His diary "Markings", which was only discovered after his death, showed a hidden side of the respected diplomat to the surprised posterity: Hammarskjöld had also been a poet and mystic who had repeatedly drawn moral inspiration for his grueling office from the grandiose nature of Lapland. With Hammarskjöld's diary entries, Rüdiger Sünner embarks on a poetic film journey to the mountain landscapes near Abisko and Kebnekaise. There Hammerskjöld learned perseverance, humility, and the ability to "resonate as an organic part within the whole," which facilitated his work to "experience the difficulties of the other from within." "A film whose haunting mood lingers with the viewer for a long time." (INFO 3)
