A young Romanian woman visits her uncle, who emigrated to the United States many years ago to build a new life as a baker. What begins as a happy reunion soon turns into a trial of strength, when a broken tooth that the uncle refuses to have treated raises questions about identity, origins and life choices. Editor Note Anna-Lena Engelhardt: THE SMOOTHNESS OF OUR TEETH is my Master of Arts graduation film at the Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg. Poetry, subtlety and a kind of softness mixed with roughness accompanied by irritation have been some of the main themes in the editing process. Without emotional amplification- emotionally strong moments should not be stretched - the film wants to show the reunion of the two main characters. The distance, the closeness, the everyday struggle and the social difficulties. It was an attempt to transform the special relationship between Dana and her uncle Costel into the language of editing. An attempt to let the audience feel the aching of the tooth, of cultural identity crisis, of culture formation and belonging, a certain discomfort and shame, but also the sweet undertones and moments in between.
