60-year-old Walter (Rainer Bock) is a removal man for evictions. He is the most loyal hauler that Walter's boss Roland Grone (Uwe Preuss) has in his shipping company. Walter ignores the pain his backbreaking job causes him as well as the suffering of the people whose privacy he invades on a daily basis. Grone is planning a risky real estate deal with the help of the shady Afsari family clan. Walter's friend, the bailiff Alfred (Thorsten Merten), uses the Afsaris' money, including his new colleague Moussa (Roman Kanonik), to buy houses cheaply, rent them out - even by force - and sell them back many times over, thus helping the Afsaris to launder dirty money. But one last tenant refuses to move out. Walter believes he recognizes his son Jan in the young man (Albrecht Schuch), whom he abandoned decades ago and has never seen again since. ATLAS is not only a thriller about criminal machinations and gentrification, but also a profound drama about father-son relationships, guilt and atonement. Nawrath succeeds in captivating the audience and making them think about the consequences of our decisions thanks to the gripping narrative and Rainer Bock's strong performance. The film impressively shows how the past can catch up with us and how deep the connections between people can go, even if there are years of silence and estrangement in between.
